Our Commitment to Sustainability
Sustainability is the reason why Nyana Nyana Eco exists.
Every decision we make is guided by one principle: it should bring a fashion piece that is better for the wearer, the maker, and the planet.
Who We Are
We are a small, founder-led collective that has built responsible practices into every layer of how we operate. We are a certified Singapore Social Enterprise (raiSE) and a recognised Company of Good (COG) recipient.

Our Materials & Coloring Method
Pre-Consumer Textile Waste
60–80% of the fabric we use is pre-consumer textile waste — deadstock rolls, end-of-roll remnants, and offcuts sourced from Indonesia-based factories that would otherwise go to landfill. As of now (April 2026) We have saved approximately 5,000 meters of fabric from waste.

Certified Fabrics
We source our deadstock rolls from Indonesia-based mills that hold GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and OekoTex certifications — meaning the fabrics are produced without harmful chemicals and meet rigorous standards for environmental and human safety. As a small brand purchasing deadstock, the certifications belong to the originating mills, but their standards guide our sourcing decisions.

Natural Dyes
We use plant-based natural dyes — such as blue hue from the Indigofera plant, yellow & brown color derived from the bark of Tegeran (Cudrania javanensis), and red tone from Kayu Secang (Sappanwood) and kayu bakau (Red Mangrove) — instead of synthetic chemical dyes. Natural dyes are gentler on skin, biodegradable, and do not release toxic waste into waterways.

Batik Tulis (Hand-Drawn Batik)
Batik Tulis is made by applying wax patterns by hand using a small tool called a canting, one mark at a time. It is one of the most labour-intensive forms of batik and is recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Indonesia.
Batik Cap (Stamp Batik)
Batik Cap uses hand-carved copper stamps to apply wax patterns onto fabric before dyeing. Each stamp is pressed by hand. It allows artisans to produce more pieces while still working by hand.
Tie Dye (Jumputan)
Jumputan is the traditional Indonesian form of tie dye, where fabric is bound, knotted, or stitched before being submerged in natural dye baths. We use only plant-based dyes, keeping the process safe for makers and free from chemical waste.
Ecoprint
Ecoprinting places leaves, flowers, and plant matter directly onto fabric before steaming or boiling. The natural pigments transfer onto the cloth, leaving one-of-a-kind impressions. No synthetic chemicals, no industrial equipment, and no toxic runoff.
Why These Techniques Matter
Batik Tulis, Batik Cap, Ecoprint, and Jumputan are labour-intensive work-of-art and cannot be fully automated. By building our collections around these methods, we are maximizing our impact in creating sustained, dignified work options for women in rural Java.

Our People
Founder
Nyana Nyana was founded by Clara Simanjuntak, a trained architect turned fashion designer and cancer survivor. Her experience with illness deepened her commitment to materials that are safe for the body, free from toxic dyes and chemical finishes.
Artisans in Rural Java
We work directly with women artisans, natural dye crafters, and home-based seamstresses in rural Java, Indonesia. They are paid fairly for their craft, supporting their livelihoods while preserving traditional techniques.

Our Practices
Small-batch We do not overproduce. Most collections are made in limited quantities to avoid excess inventory and waste.
Reversible designs Several pieces are reversible, giving you two looks from one garment.
Multi-label collective model By housing multiple ethical brands under one roof, we reduce the retail footprint and resource duplication that comes from each brand operating independently.
No virgin synthetic fabrics We do not use polyester, nylon, or other petroleum-derived synthetics in our core collections.

A Note on Honesty
We are a small brand working with small rural workshops. We do not hold independent certifications for every process, and we will not claim what we do not have. What we can tell you is that we source carefully, pay fairly, make in small quantities, and have been doing this since 2019.
